History

In the mid 1970’s, Scappoose resident Dorothy Churchill and a select few intrepid volunteers, had a vision for a transportation program to serve Columbia County’s senior citizens. They put together some fund raisers and an old van or two, and Colco Transportation was born. Over the years, Colco grew to be the largest rural transportation program in the State of Oregon, serving not only the elderly, but also the disabled and general public. In 2003, Colco’s board of directors notified the Columbia County Commissioners that they would not be able to continue service, due to financial constraints, and they would be ceasing operations. The Board of Commissioners, knowing the severe negative impact this would have on the communities of the County, sprung into action, assigning then County Council, John Knight to construct a plan to save the public transit system. Needless to say, he did just that, and operating with sub-contractors, Columbia County Rider was born. In a short time, ridership grew, and the reins of the Columbia County Transit Division were turned over to Janet Wright, Director of Economic Development, and Commissioners Assistant. She leads the agency today as Transit Director. Today, as our county grows, Columbia County Rider continues to grow and add new services.
